Sekayu Agriculture Park An Icon For T'ganu Tourism

KUALA BERANG, May 14 -- The Sekayu State Agriculture Park in Hulu Terengganu will be given a facelift in line with its status as the new icon for Terengganu's tourism industry, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said.

He said facilities at the park would be improved to make it a tourist destination as well as a place for research on the flora and fauna there.

"We will provide the allocation to redevelop the park which became `dead' when PAS took over the (state) government. The area was not maintained, causing many trees to be damaged.

"It's sad to have such a beautiful place like this neglected," he told reporters after launching a new facelift plan for the park here today.

Idris said the state government would also request for federal funding through the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry for the purpose, but did not mention the cost needed to redevelop the 85-hectare park.

He said the park, opened in 1982, was also known as a fruit museum where a RM2 million allocation was made for planting fruit trees, herbal plants and flowering plants and building fish ponds.

However, he said, when PAS took over the state government in 1999, they did not maintain the park properly, causing the trees to be damaged.

Idris said the state government had spent RM3 million since 2005 to redevelop the park which involved replanting of fruit trees and building of fish ponds and recreation facilities.

"The state government will provide additional allocation to equip and upgrade the park, to make it one of the best agriculture parks in the country," he added.
